After making a new design for a Basic/LL sheet, I was able to see how a group of players adopted the "modern" layout. To revise it, I noted that space for modified point tallies would have to be included. For example, enlarging the box for Hit Points, so damage can be recorded without scribbling in the margins or other stat areas. Oddly, the players all used the Character Sketch spot, to add some style that the page itself omits. The revision includes my generic Talent Chart for Class powers, the option to use 5 or 2 Saving Throw categories, and a scale for the 3d6 bonuses.

B/X Talent Check Charts continued! E-mail

A couple other blogs in the Network prompted me to look again at the "talent chart" I had thrown together for B/X Thief abilities. The chart is an inexact conversion of the percentile chart for success at picking pockets, hiding, etc, using the d12. The numbers improve in what I'd consider the largest acceptable level clusters (1~3, 4~6, 7~9, etc). Plus, there is enough fiddle-factor to allow modifiers from the character stats (-3 to +3 in my LL set up) and challenge difficulty (like a complex lock +2). After reading the posts at Grognardia about checks not being tied directly to stats, I thought that perhaps other classes could have a level-centric "talent chart" like the Thief. Next thing I know, I see a spell check chart for sorcery over at Ode to Black Dougal, where I made a few queries. I agree with Mr. Armstrong that there should be a "test" to avoid spell backfires and for learning/recalling arcane formulas. I think a wizard should be able to attempt more powerful spells if he is really intelligent and can risk the price of failure. All this started my look at class talents in a matrix, where abilities are "rolled out" and become easier as the player advances in experience. Below I have some quick drafts for the Fighter, Knave, and Wizard:

In the last pages I introduce Laris' "mother", the clan leader of the Dark Elves and practicing Dracologist. With a lifespan of centuries, these villains have had the time to interbreed monsters, which become defensive troops or weird livestock. Currently, the female dragon that had once sheltered the exiled Elves has become an overgrown "guest", relying on the clan for food and other concerns. The Elf queen realizes that the Impwitch knows the old dragon is weak, but she plans to strike back with the chimeric "cousins" of her wayward child.

After this, I'll be back to the various RPG projects for FIGHT ON, Labyrinth Lord, and other pulp games.
