Recently, a video game download site (Direct 2 Drive) offered Neverwinter Nights 2 for the bargain price of 5 bucks. My friends and I had been enthusiastic about an update to the first generation classic, since independent developers might release free content in the form of multiplayer modules. Sadly, the price was always too high, and the reviews too negative. After attempting to play the main storyline of NWN2, I can say with conviction that I'm glad we waited for the bargain price. In a regular D&D game, you don't have to worry about bad camera angles and monsters that can shoot arrows through solid walls. Best of all, you can say, "take a hike" to every annoying henchman that you meet along the way. I think I could sell a module where your PCs get to shoot ballistae at the entire roster of egregious Neverwinter henchies. Looking back, my favorite D&D video games are the arcade ones made by CAPCOM, where your traditional team blasts (side-scrolls?) through Mystara with extreme prejudice and CLOUDKILL.

For over two months I've been planning to run my OPD, Ruffthroats Rathskeller, at a local Ohio convention. Fortunately, there was an event not too far away that takes place after the "epic-ness" of ORIGINS. I signed up for a day at Con on the Cob, last Friday to be exact, where it would be easy to referee a game during a decent time slot. Regrettably, two persons whom I shall not name that had signed up to play via the Con website never materialized. I sat across from an empty table till an interested old-skooler, all the way from Arizona no less, took note of my Labyrinth Lord sign and called his friends to help fill the seats. Astonishingly, two of the gentlemen were artists in the genre, with portfolio art in print by Goblinoid Games! Robert also happened to be on the OD&D Forum that is used for folks involved in FIGHT ON magazine, the project I had named as a resource for some of the parts in the revised Rathskeller. I distributed the pre-gens on my handcrafted LL character sheets, and dice were soon rolled.

Materials for the session included my one page map and monster key, GM notes from LL pdfs, and the Hexographer map of Minaria that was posted here. Some of these you can see in this photo of the game table:

The next release of Fight On! magazine will feature my attempt at a dungeon level, the name of which had already been selected. Writing the wordy descriptions reminded me of why I just like to make the cool illustrations. Below is a sneak peek at one of the new creatures, a chimerical beast that is part Dire Tiger, Giant Wasp, and Horned Beetle! I didn't make it really overpowered; the dungeon is only level 6.
