Like many crumbling bastions, the Ghost Tower will no longer be generating EXP fodder for online adventurers. I'm letting the moat water turn stagnant till I revise things completely, after which the popular projects here will be tucked into neat galleries. Surviving the overhaul will be the most read topics, named below in statistical order:

1 - Map Stuff: I'm keen on the Hexographer program, so my colored land masses (and castle layouts) will live on. Apparently, blog readers love posts about making stylish maps.

2 - Resource Downloads: Uploading collections isn't my thing, but I will certainly link to typefaces/music useful to gamers.

3 - Silly Heroes: My illustrated cartoons will be catalogued; funny stuff always increases your traffic. I may even bring back the Justice League spoof I did a while back.

4 - Basic Classes: One day I may complete a "house rule" PDF for D&D, call it "Lee's Labyrinth Literature" or such.

5 - Genre Critiques: Stanching the flow of crap from various sources will continue.

2010 projects will continue to involve publications I'm committed to, like FIGHT ON magazine. Even if this site goes defunct, any gaming merchandise I make will be distributed for review, so other blogs may note stirrings from the ghost tower...

Maps

What better to do on a holiday than burn rubber through an irradiated wasteland, crushing the ancient bones of silver screen C-listers! This hexographer map is a chunk out of my vision of a future California coast (uploaded in a previous post). I'm working on encounters for the sandbox format, with some known locations filled in and some local monster threats named. Some details and notes:

1) The primary settlement of "Morrow" men, 29 Palms, isn't on the map. The character "base" is a lone fortification known as Sunshine Depot, named after the raisin company logo emblazoning semi-trailers used to form the perimeter. This is the barter-based machine shop and armory for agents and explorers of the wasteland.

2) Inyo Oasis is a priceless lake of fresh water, needing brave fighters to defend it from the rampant Reno Morlocks and dangerous Cisternaworms (Puddle Worms in the MF rulebook).

3) The Filter-Face Gang are outlaws from 29 Palms, soldiers that refused to cooperate with friendly mutants from Shasta Dome. They stole the best anti-radiation gear from the stronghold, and rarely remove their filtration masks. They live to hunt subhumans and mutated "big game".

4) Poison Pasadena & Septic Simi are the only southern ruins where structures from the lost ages survive. However, these hot spots are filled with vermin, like exploding Ozo-Crows and giant insects.

5) Tehachapi Tower is a defended gas well and communication tower. Men armed with flamethrowers patrol the grassland for swarms of Glowcusts, ravenous 16" grasshoppers that require population control.

6) The Miracle Forest of Kern is a new wetland of petrified juniper and edible giant mushrooms. Unfortunately, the strange bio-weapons known as Prop-Dogs remain here from the Sectoid War. Grown in underground cyber-vats, these canine creatures have had their skulls replaced with a bullet-shaped metal case. Blender-like blades rotate around the circumference of the robotic "head", mutilating any humanoid target the dogs find.

7) Boracic Jellies are sea-creatures hunted for their unique salt compounds that are used to make energy weapon power cells.

8) Lepdalids are the rabbit leeches from the MF book, and Steeranosaurs are ox-headed livestock with dinosaur bodies. The latter are occasionally used as riding mounts.

Post-Apoc-Armada: Scorpion Gunboat E-mail
Drawings

While browsing a site on pinball graphics, I saw some great art that featured a hovercraft-like tank, surrounded by churning waves and a two-headed sea dragon. I thought the vessel would be perfect for a Post-Apocalyptic setting, where the tech level is 21st century. From the colorful glass image, I could see that the craft was wide and armed with big guns. I then went searching for gunboat designs that could be the "skeleton" for the SCORPION 3. First, I found information on the famous MK PT boats from the 1960's. These riverine ships were bristling with weapons, everything an adventuring group would need to eradicate pulp-era threats. Unfortunately, this scale of vessel doesn't seem to have a modern relative in the modern US Navy (based on brief surfing). I had to look at the international scene, where other countries have new "stealth ships" diminutive enough to handle the raiding/coastal patrol task, like the Skjold class from Norway (pictured below the MKIII).

I decided that a modestly futuristic ship would have a catamaran-type of hull, with angular shapes, and heavier weapons than what might be carried or mounted on a road vehicle. Since my Mutant Future realm has alien technology, perhaps the human raiders need big caliber guns to defeat "Martian" energy screens. Basically, the good guys would have to dig up the primitive artillery that shot dumb, yet enormous, shells. Thus, my new design has two classic "pounders", the 40mm autocannon and the 81mm mortar. In a world flooded by mile-high waves and melted polar caps, having control of waterways would be significant. The whole idea of an aquatic Navy might be strange to space-faring invaders, who might not expect a "Viking" sortie.

The simplified elevation and deck plans were "traced" over the proportions of the MKIII patrol boat. In addition to the main weapons, there would also be "boarder/monster" repellent in the form of high-pressure steam nozzles encircling the raised tower. Furthermore, soldiers inside would have jet-packs for making ship-to-target assaults.
